What Ancient Cities Were Really Like (w/ Greg Woolf)

In this episode, British historian and archaeologist Greg Woolf joins me to talk about how ancient cities developed, why we often have the wrong impression about them, and much more.

Greg Woolf is a cultural historian of the ancient world, especially known for his work on the Roman Empire. Much of his work combines archaeological and historical material to explore history in the very long term. He has written on cultural imperialism and local responses to it, on the Roman economy, on Roman intellectual culture, and also on ancient religion. His latest monograph The Life and Death of Ancient Cities: a Natural History was published in 2020.

Since January 2015, he has been the Director of the Institute of Classical Studies, and Professor of Classics at the University of London.

You can find all of Professor Woolf’s books here.
